Vi gick igenom blom-avdelningen först. Det var helt okej. Sen kom vi till häst-delen. Vi kastade en blick in dit och kunde konstatera att vi inte hade behov av att se mer. Det var ingen som slog sina hästar eller nånting sånt, men man kan ju bli lite matt av att se så många människor som verkar veta så lite om sina djur.
Såg ett par flickor i trettonårsåldern som åkte runt på varsin ponny. Eller åkte och åkte, de red nog ändå helt okej. Jag kom på att i deras ålder drömde jag om att få göra så, att visa upp sig på en häst, och insåg hur mycket jag förändrats sen dess, speciellt under det senaste året. Nu har jag inte det minsta behov av att folk ska se mig när jag rider. Det är liksom inte viktigt längre.
Låter ju som en klyscha, men det är inte förrän nu, när jag under flera månader levt med en hästhållning där man anstränger sig så sjukt för att förstå hästen, och där man har en vilja att verkligen ha hästen med sig, inte bara fysiskt utan psykiskt också, som den där längtan efter cred från andra människor för det man gör med sin häst
har försvunnit. Kanske inte minst för att jag har insett hur förhållandevis få människor det är som faktiskt skulle förstå skillnaden mellan en häst som är “med” och en häst som inte är det, eller skillnaden mellan en häst som faktiskt är lösgjord (och av den anledningen går i en vacker form) och en som bara kröker på nacken för att någon drar i tyglarna.
Det är otroligt skrämmande hur många hästägare det finns som verkligen inte vet nånting om hur en häst fungerar. När man betänker att vi trots allt berövat hästen dess naturliga miljö, friheten, kan man ju tycka att vi skulle vara lite bättre på att tillgodose deras behov och se till att det vi gör med dem faktiskt sker på deras villkor också, och inte bara handlar om vårt nytta och nöje.
Ett bra exempel på den allmänt låga kunskapsnivån är det här med hovar. De flesta hästmänniskor vars hästhållning jag vet nåt om, verkar ha vetat vääääldigt lite om detta för hästen helt avgörande organ. Till exempel visste jag förut inget av följande:
Hoven är inte bara död vävnad. Den är ett mycket komplicerat organ, som utvidgas vid varje steg då hästen sätter vikt på den. Då detta sker, öppnas blodkärlen i läderhuden upp. När sen hästen lyfter hoven igen, dras de ihop, och på så sätt cirkulerar blodet. Detta kallas hovmekanism, och behövs för att hjälpa hjärtat pumpa runt blodet i hästens stora kropp. När man sätter på en sko, hindras hovmekanismen, och får i längden till följd att hjärtat blir överbelastat – särskilt om den står i en box, då den inte har möjlighet att röra på sig alls. Hovmekanismen innebär också stötdämpning, dvs om den hindras ökar belastningen på leder och ligament. Betänkas bör även att man ju vid skoning fixerar hoven i sitt smalaste läge, när den inte är viktbärande.
När skon sätts på, hindrar den också hoven från att växa normalt. Det gör att hoven blir trång. Detta är väldigt, väldigt vanligt, många reagerar inte ens på det som onormalt för det är så många hästar som har det. Eftersom en mycket stor del av hästarna inom konventionell skoning dessutom lämnas med för höga trakter (=hälar), vilket gör att hovbenet inne i hoven blir på högkant och på det sättet trycker mot läderhuden i sulan, blir cirkulationen inne i hoven ännu mera nedsatt. Detta i sin tur försämrar tillväxten av hovhorn. De höga traktrna gör också att sulan blir mer konkav och trycker upp i hovens inre, dett kan bland annat leda till det som kalla strålbenshälta, och ofta anses obotligt (fast det i många fall kan räcka med att återställa hoven till dess korrekta form för att hästen ska bli bättre). Glöm inte bort att man med jämna mellanrum också perforerar den med spikar, och att de flesta hästars hovar är konstant uttorkade i brist på den dagliga exponering för vatten som de skulle få i det vilda, samt att den ammoniak som bildas i en aldrig så ren boxbädd, fräter.
Allt detta leder till inflammationer, nedbrytning av hoven vilket gör den mindre motståndskraftig mot sjukdomar som t ex fång, och inte minst smärta på grund av det konstanta trycket.
Det kallar jag livskvalité.
Och tänk att jag aldrig, under åtta år på ridskola och flera till i olika privatstall, aldrig ens hörde talas om det. Jag trodde att “hoven är som våra naglar, ingen känsel, det är därför man kan spika i dem utan att det gör ont”. Det yttersta på hoven är visserligen som en nagel, men den är också det skyddande skiktet för de livsviktiga funktioner som finns där innanför, och det är avgörande för hästen att den kan expandera och dra ihop sig. Allt detta motverkas, om nån skulle ha missat det, av skon.
Många vet ju inte om att detta händer i deras hästars hovar, eftersom också nervernas funktion är nedsatt pga av den dåliga cirkulationen i en skodd hov, eller för att man vet så lite om hovar att man inte ser skadorna förrän hästen blir verkligt sjuk. Och även då är det oftast inte ens ett alternativ att ta bort skon; man tar bort symptomen istället.
Till saken hör att en barfota häst (om den inte redan har varit skodd länge och av den eller annan orsak har deformerad hovtillväxt och hovben), kan fungera lika bra som en skodd hov (i längden bättre). Om den är korrekt trimmad och har naturliga levnadsförhållanden där den kan röra på sig så mycket den behöver och inte står i en frätande bädd, det vill säga. Även skadade hovar kan, med tid och kunskap, återställas någorlunda. En av hästarna här på gården hade strålbenshälta när den köptes. Det anses ofta obotligt. Han är nu helt frisk (och dessutom en otrolig ridhäst).
Jag bävar lite för framtiden. Jag vet ju hur mycket det finns att se, som jag nu kommer förstå hur fel det är.
Det är lite som den där fêten i Cazals. Jag skulle vilja vända utanför och gå tillbaka till min skyddade värld, där hästfolket vet vad de gör.
